Letters from John Owen, Jr. to his family in Mass. describing military activities while serving as a Civil War officer in the 36th U.S. Colored Infantry at Point Lookout, Md.; at James River, Bermuda Hundred, Point of Rocks, Deep Bottom, Dutch Gap, and Chafin's Farm, Va.; and during troop movement to Mobile, Ala. aboard the steamer "Western Metropolis." Most describe aspects of the Petersburg Campaign (May 1864-June 1865) including the deployment of Afro-American troops, breastwork construction, the Petersburg Mine Assault, the Dutch Gap Canal, treatment of prisoners of war, and requests for clothing and supplies. Also includes financial receipts, military passes, morning reports, and a list of soldiers.
